Understanding Student Indexing in Physiotherapy: A Guide for Students and the Public

The Physiotherapy Council of Kenya (PCK) plays a pivotal role in regulating physiotherapy education and practice in the country. One of its key functions is the indexing of physiotherapy students—a process that ensures students are enrolled in accredited institutions and meet the necessary educational standards.

The indexing process is a safeguard to ensure that only qualified and properly trained individuals provide physiotherapy services. It upholds the standards of the profession and protects the public from unqualified practitioners.

What is Student Indexing?

Student indexing is the process by which the PCK assigns a unique index number to each student admitted to an accredited physiotherapy training institution. This number serves as an official record, tracking the student's progress from admission through training, assessment, and eventual registration as a professional physiotherapist.

Why is Indexing Important?

  • Verification of Credentials: Indexing confirms that a student is enrolled in a recognized program and meets the minimum entry requirements.
  • Eligibility for Assessment: Only indexed students are eligible to sit for the Council's pre-registration examinations, a prerequisite for professional practice.
  • Professional Recognition: An index number is essential for registration and licensing, ensuring that only qualified individuals enter the physiotherapy profession.

Who Needs to be Indexed?

All students admitted to study physiotherapy in approved training institutions in Kenya must apply for indexing. This includes students pursuing Diploma or Bachelor's degree programs in physiotherapy.

Entry Requirements for Indexing

To be eligible for indexing, students must meet the following minimum academic qualifications:

Diploma in Physiotherapy:

  • KCSE mean grade of C plain.
  • C- in English or Kiswahili.
  • C- in Mathematics and Physics or Physical Sciences.
  • C- in Biology.
  • C- in Chemistry or Physics or Physical Sciences or Mathematics.

Bachelor's Degree in Physiotherapy:

  • KCSE mean grade of C+.
  • C+ in Biology.
  • C+ in Chemistry.
  • C+ in Mathematics or Physics.
  • C+ in English or Kiswahili.

These requirements ensure that students possess the foundational knowledge necessary for effective training and practice in physiotherapy.

The Indexing Process

  1. Submission by Training Institutions: Accredited institutions must submit a complete list of their admitted students to the PCK within six months of admission.
  2. Verification by PCK: The Council reviews the submissions to ensure compliance with admission criteria and program accreditation.
  3. Issuance of Index Numbers: Upon successful verification, the PCK assigns unique index numbers to the students.
  4. Annual Updates: Institutions are required to report any changes, such as students who have temporarily or permanently left the program, along with reasons for such changes.

Students are required to visit the PCK Portal to apply for indexing.

Deadline for Indexing

For the current academic cycle, the deadline for student indexing is 30th June 2025. Students and institutions are urged to adhere to this deadline to avoid delays in subsequent assessments and registration processes.

Consequences of Non-Indexing

Failure to undergo the indexing process can have significant implications:

  • Ineligibility for Examinations: Students without an index number cannot sit for the Council's pre-registration examinations.
  • Professional Practice Restrictions: Without indexing, graduates cannot be registered or licensed to practice physiotherapy in Kenya.
  • Legal Implications: Practicing without proper registration is a violation of the Physiotherapists Act and may lead to legal consequences.
